Jabari Akeel Cummings (born November 14, 1988) is an American professional baseball outfielder for the Kane County Cougars of the American Association of Professional Baseball. He was drafted by in the 20th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 2013.

Early life

Jabari Cummings was born in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands to Kenneth, a crane operator from Saint Kitts, and Corlette, an insurance agent from Antigua. As a child, his favorite baseball player was Derek Jeter. Cummings attended Charlotte Amalie High School.

Professional career

Chicago White Sox

Cummings was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 20th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He made his professional debut that season for the Bristol White Sox, batting .302 with one home run and 24 RBIs over 53 games.

Cummings played 2008 and 2009 with the Great Falls Voyagers. In 2010, he played with the Kannapolis Intimidators where he hit .274 with two home runs and 27 RBIs over 63 games. Cummings spent 2011 with the Winston-Salem Dash, slashing .250/.338/.402 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs over 122 games, and after the season, played in the Arizona Fall League for the Glendale Desert Dogs. He spent 2012 with the Birmingham Barons, batting .241 with five home runs and forty RBIs over 118 games. In 2013, he returned to play for Birmingham. The White Sox promoted Cummings to the major leagues on August 11, 2013, directly calling him up from Double-A. He made his MLB debut that day, as a pinch runner. He recorded his first major league hit during his first major league at bat on August 13, in a 4–3 victory against the Detroit Tigers. After initially wearing uniform number 74 for Chicago, he switched to number 35 on September 14.

Overall with the 2013 White Sox, Cummings appeared in 35 MLB games, batting 22-for-91 (.242) with no home runs and eight RBIs; defensively, he played ten games in left field, six games in centerfield, and nineteen games in right field.

On November 21, 2013, Cummings signed a one-year, $700,000 deal to remain a member of the White Sox organization. On May 31, 2014, Cummings was designated for assignment after appearing in 17 games, batting 8-for-41 (.195) with no home runs and five RBIs.

Miami Marlins

On June 1, 2014, the White Sox traded Cummings to the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations. He was assigned to the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs where he hit .243 with 6 home runs and 28 RBIs over 60 games. On November 12, 2014, Cummings resigned with the Marlins organization. He elected for free agency on November 7, 2015. On December 13, Cummings resigned a minor-league contract. He elected for free agency on November 7, 2016.

Washington Nationals

On January 12, 2017, Cummings signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals. He elected free agency on November 2, 2017.

Miami Marlins (second stint)

In December 2018, Cummings resigned with the Miami Marlins organization.

San Diego Padres

On January 24, 2019, Cummings signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres. He was released on June 9.

Diablos Rojos del México

On April 8, 2020, Cummings signed with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League. In 2020, he did not play a game because of the cancellation of the Mexican League season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Philadelphia Phillies

On February 1, 2021, Cummings signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. On July 28, 2021, the Phillies promoted Cummings to the major leagues. On July 31, he was designated for assignment without making an appearance. This made him a rare Phantom ballplayer during the 2021 season. On August 2, he was outrighted back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs, with whom he ended the year.

Kane County Cougars

On May 10, 2022, Cummings signed with the Kane County Cougars of the American Association of Professional Baseball.
