Zalgo is a fictional creature created as an Internet meme, first documented in late July of 2004. While it is not Lovecraftian, it bears a close resemblance to Cthulu and similar tentacle-god creatures. Text-based references to Zalgo often contain Unicode junk characters to give credence to the belief that merely viewing a webpage with Zalgo-centric content can cause him/it to infect your computer. A common phrase connected with the meme is:
"To invoke the hive-mind representing chaos. Invoking the feeling of chaos. With out order. The Nezperdian hive-mind of chaos. Zalgo. He who Waits Behind The Wall. ZALGO!"
The all-caps "ZALGO!" at the end of the phrase is sometimes replaced with "Zalgo. HE COMES."
Appearance
editZalgo does not often, if ever, appear directly in visual or printed media, though humans and other creatures 'infected' with Zalgo often do. In the few pictures where it does appear, Zalgo seems to be a Cthulu-esque being with dark, spiked tentacles, reflective black eyes, and a lamprey-like mouth with multiple rows of small, sharp teeth.
This appearance is also a common theme in edited comics or images with Zalgo-possessed beings, though specific appearance varies and some images merely show blood from the mouth of the possessed and a string of Unicode junk characters in the background. It is interesting to note that many Photoshopped pictures of Zalgo-possessed beings are of significantly higher quality than most other Photoshopped meme-related pictures.
Appearances
editThe earliest verifiable appearance of Zalgo either in text or imagery occurs in an entry on forums.somethingawful.com dated July 27, 2004, with several Zalgo-fied comics, including comics of Archie and Garfield, the former being arguably the highest-quality Zalgo comics available. The webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del has referenced Zalgo several times during its run.
