Hi, my name is Frozen Icicle (not my real name obviously) and I'm a young woman from Canada and I joined Wikipedia in the summer of 2013. I joined because I wanted to contribute my knowledge to various articles, and help improve the content and quality of some of them.
A little background information about me and why I contribute to Wikipedia
editEssentially one of the reasons I joined Wikipedia, is because I was tired of seeing misleading and biased information pertaining to certain articles being left unchanged so I ultimately decided that if nobody else was going to come along and fix the content, then I was going to take matters into my own hands and fix at least some of it myself. I am by no means a perfect Wikipedian and like the encyclopedia itself, I am a work in progress, striving to improve, learn, and maneuver myself around the site better every day.
I'm a feminist as well. I don't identify with any movement though, as I find that trying to put a feminist label on myself is exhausting and a waste of time. Therefore, I'm just a feminist. It is my understanding that there's a bit of a gender bias on Wikipedia regarding the fact that most editors are male, and that there's apparently a misogynistic atmosphere to the site. That is another reason why I joined Wikipedia—to try and counter this systemic bias. Being a female Wikipedian, how do I say this...I just want to be right. Throughout my life I've dealt with numerous insecurities, setbacks, sexism, and the constant feeling that I'm just not good enough or smart enough; I've always felt mislead, deceived, tricked, lied to and I just don't want to feel that way anymore. I want to make a difference, I want to influence people, I want to be taken seriously, I want to feel like I'm smart and that I know what I'm talking about, and overall I just want to be right about something for once. These goals and desires don't pertain only to Wikipedia, but to every sphere of life as well.
I just don't want the fact that I'm a woman to stop me from reaching my full potential. If I can't empower every woman in the world, I at least want to empower myself and I want to have all, or at least most of the same rights as my male counterparts. As far as we know, you only live once, if that's the case then I'm going to ensure I get the best out of it, and get what I want out of it.
