The Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook (English: Park of the Coaticook Gorge) is a non-profit private park located in the town of Coaticook, Quebec. Situated principally on its namesake, the Coaticook Gorge, the park offers a multitude of different activities in both summer and winter seasons, namely camping, hiking trails, mountain biking, snowshoeing, fatbike and its night experience, Foresta Lumina. Built in 1988, one of the most major attractions of the park is its suspension footbridge, spanning the gorge at a total of 169 meters (554 feet).
The park has three main facilities: the Accueil Denis-Maurais, from which the Gorge trail, Foresta Lumina and suspension bridge are accessible; the Accueil du Grange ronde, the administrative center at which the camping, three other trails and all winter activities are; and the Parc Découverte Nature, offering activities revolving around fishing and pisciculture, as well as its interactive experience, Acoatica.
History
editBy 1940, the Coaticook Gorge had already become a tourist spot for those passing through the industrial town. While 30 years early, discussions on creating a municipal park had already begun, with propositions of expanding and creating touristic infrastructure, such as picnic spaces, parking and more.[9] In 1975, however, planning for the development of a park would be taken to different levels of government, with the provincial Ministry of Tourism signaling its support and involvement in the creation of a park on the Coaticook gorge in February of 1975.[10]
Work started soon thereafter, continuing on intensively for the next few years. Many of the initial plans paved the way to the contemporary activities of the park, including the establishing of campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic and barbeque areas as well as the repairing of the covered bridge that spanned the Coaticook River on the St-Marc road.[11]
