Matthew Fredrick[3] (born September 20, 1988), known professionally as Matthias, is an American YouTuber, musician, and entrepreneur. He is best known for various YouTube channels, and the founder and CEO of the Los Angeles-based multi-channel network Hi5 Studios.

Early life

edit

Matthias was born in Woodland Hills, California in 1988, alongside his sister Sarah and brother J-Fred.[1] During high school, Matthias became a musician after joining his first band, and first met his future wife, Amanda Faye.[4] He released his first album, Where We Should Be, under the alias The Social in 2008.[1][5]

Career

edit

On YouTube, Matthias began his career uploading videos of covers and original songs in April 2012, and soon after sketch comedy and parodies, encouraged by his friend Alex Goyette.[3][4][6] He would eventually create various challenge and comment-based videos,[7] and later rebrand to unboxing.[8] He has collaborated with other YouTube personalities, including Jack Douglass, Jacksepticeye, Markiplier, Joe Penna, and Jon Cozart to promote his channel.[9]

In 2013, Matthias competed in and won the second season of Internet Icon.[10][11]

In 2014, Matthias joined FameBit, which allowed him to better connect with brand deals to support creating videos.[12][13] He also discussed his issues with Facebook's updates at the time, claiming they were "personally invasive".[14]

Matthias created Team Edge in 2015, alongside his brother J-Fred and brother-in-law Bryan Valle,[15] due to the success of his challenge videos.[7]

Matthias was invited to participate in YouTube Rewind 2017, but declined, citing YouTube's lack of transparency in analytics and updates to the website.[16]

Personal life

edit

Matthias currently lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife, Amanda Faye, who creates fashion and travel vlogs.[17] Their daughter Luna was born July 30, 2016,[18] and they are expecting their second child.[19]
