University Boulevard is a street in central Tucson, Arizona that runs for two miles from Main Avenue on the west to Campbell Avenue on the east. Along its route the street passes through the historic Dunbar Spring and West University neighborhoods, the Main Gate shopping district, and the University of Arizona campus. The street is part of Tucson's first bike boulevard. A half-mile stretch of University Boulevard just west of the campus will carry Tucson Streetcar traffic starting in summer 2014.

University of Arizona campus

edit

Arizona State Museum, north building

At Park Avenue the street passes through the University of Arizona Main Gate, a formal entrance to campus through a wall of Sentinel Peak basalt that surrounded the entire Arizona campus at the time of its construction. Just inside the gate, set behind grass lawns on both sides of the street, are the Arizona State Museum north and south buildings. The street then passes Centennial Hall and other historic university buildings still used as academic offices and classrooms.

Palms line the University of Arizona mall.

The street forms a loop around Old Main, the university's original building, before continuing on as two parallel roads separated by a wide area of grass. This section of University Boulevard, between Old Main and Campbell, is known to the campus population as "The Mall". For all but two blocks just west of Campbell the Mall is a car-free zone.

3rd St. - University Bike Boulevard

edit

University Avenue is the western-most section of the 3rd St. - University Bike Boulevard which stretches 7.5 miles across central Tucson linking east-side bicycle-commuters with the University of Arizona and downtown. Near its center the boulevard intersects with Treat Avenue, one of three existing bike routes in the city that are funded for cycling infrastructure improvements, primarily installation of signalized crossings at major streets and other traffic-calming measures, to establish a network of low-stress bikeways intended to build upon the success of the same improvements along 3rd St. and University Boulevard.
