José Eduardo de Lima Pinto da Costa (born in Cedofeita, Porto, 3 April 1934), is a Portuguese doctor specialized in forensic medicine. He is a former director of the Porto Institute of Legal Medicine, and has made multiple appearances on the television program Praça da Alegria.[1] He now teaches forensics at the Lusíada University of Porto.

editPinto da Costa was born as the eldest of six children of José Alexandrino Teixeira da Costa (Foz do Douro, Porto, June 9, 1910 – Aldoar, Porto, December 6, 1977), a merchant, and wife Maria Elisa Bessa de Lima de Amorim Pinto (São Mamede de Infesta, Matosinhos, May 15, 1913 – November 14, 1997). One of his brothers is Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the President of the sports club FC Porto.[2]
Marriage and children
editHe married on January 8, 1962 Maria da Graça de Freitas do Amaral Lobo Machado, of the Viscounts of Paço de Nespereira (b. Guimarães, November 18, 1934), a first cousin of Diogo de Freitas do Amaral, and had two sons and one daughter:

- Rui Manuel Lobo Machado Pinto da Costa (b. 1967)
- Mafalda Lobo Machado Pinto da Costa (b. 1968)
Education and Career
editPinto da Costa received his medical education at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Porto, enrolling in 1953 and graduating in 1960. His thesis was entitled "Morte por Acção do Óxido de Carbono" (Death Caused by Carbon Dioxide).
Following this, in 1961, he became an Assistant Lecturer in Forensic Medicine and Forensic Toxicology. In 1973 he earned a PhD in Forensic Medicine in Porto. He joined the faculty of the University of Porto as an assistant professor, then became an associate professor, and in 1996 a full professor.
In 1975, he was appointed sub-director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Porto; in 1976 he became its director. In the late 1980s, Pinto da Costa was elected the first president of the Board of Forensic Medicine of the Portuguese Medical Association, and chaired the Higher Forensic Medicine Council from 1988 to 1998.[2]
He has performed about 30,000 autopsies.[3]
