The two official lists of the names of Guantanamo captives contain an alarming number of discrepancies. Over one hundred names were spelled differently on the two lists.

On April 20th 2006 the DoD partially complied (6 weeks late) with a court order to release the names of all the captives by releasing the names of the 558 captives whose status as "enemy combatants" was reviewed by a Combatant Status Review Tribunal.

On May 15th 2006 the DoD released the names of all 759 captives who had been detained in Guantanamo -- in military custody.

First name unknown

Sixteen captives were listed, on the second list with the acronym "FNU" in place of their first name. FNU == First Name Unknown.

American intelligence analysts seemed unable to cope with individuals who had just a single name -- a common phenomenon in Afghanistan.
