The Katherine G' is a vessel based in New York City, which capsized on April 6, 2012.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
CBS News's local affiliate calls the vessel a tugboat.[1] ABC News's local affiliate calls the vessel a spud barge -- "a unique barge that features 3 deck pilings.".[1] A spud barge is a flat-bottomed vessel with extendable legs which can be extended to the bottom of shallow anchorages to provide a stable working platform.[7] The vessel was loading a 60 ton construction crane when she capsized near Liberty Island.
All three crew members were rescued by NY Waterway ferry Mychal Judge.[1] Mohamed Gouda, the ferry's captain, had commanded one of the ferries that rescused the passengers and crew of the flight 1549. Gouda told CBS New York that his crew deployed Jason's cradles to enable the sailors to board his vessel.
The work boat was assisting in maintenance work on the Statue of Liberty.[7]
