Breathe California is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to promoting healthy lungs and fighting lung disease through advocacy and services that include asthma prevention and management, reducing tobacco use and the public’s exposure to secondhand smoke, improving air quality and lessening the effects of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Breathe California was originally founded in the early 1900’s as the Tuberculosis Association and is the oldest voluntary heath organization in California. In 2006, Breathe California ended its affiliation with the American Lung Association and changed its name, focusing its resources exclusively on local programs. Today, 77 cents of every dollar raised through Breathe California is used solely in California to promote healthy lungs through prevention, advocacy, education, research and direct services at the community level.
Breathe California's Local Affiliates
While Breathe California's statewide advocates work for the welfare of California as a whole, it is through the local affiliate offices that Breathe California identifies a community problem or need, determines the best way to address it, and finds apppropriate sources of funding which allows for the development and implementation of programs and services on the local level.
