Organizing for article on Asymmetric Collaboration
Synchronous vs asynchronous (time/space) Symmetric vs asymmetric (quality/quantity of work)
Asymmetric formalization reflects different degrees of contribution. http://books.google.com/books?id=mX4Zh77vG3UC&pg=PA83&dq=asymmetric+collaboration&ei=wh7BSY-jEIj-lQSk-YzKBQ
The amount of preparatory work is not symmetrical for a given collaborative interaction. The organizer does most of this work, and participants are expected to process it and give feedback, which is much smaller in volume of information per person. This is very much true on the edge of network. I usually describe it as small group inside engaging large group outside. In other words, the edge of network is about asymmetrical collaboration. http://edge4dev.wordpress.com/2008/02/27/asymmetrical/
Asymmetric collaboration is a new type of collaboration, in which two or more people who have different environments or standpoints work together toward a common goal. http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?arnumber=568893
Asymmetric collaboration through tele-presence. http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1026793
Collaborative software needs to facilitate synchronous/asynchronous & symmetrical/asymmetrical collaboration. Reason for email/attachment proliferation is because it “facilitates” all forms of collaboration, albeit in a very inefficient manner.
