Philadelphia Flyers (2008–2022)

Giroux with the Flyers in 2010

Giroux was expected to break into the Flyers' opening night lineup for the 2008–09 season, but after a middling performance during training camp, coach John Stevens decided that it would be more valuable for him to receive extended playing time with the Philadelphia Phantoms, the Flyers' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, than spending limited time on the ice as part of the Flyers' fourth offensive line.[1] While Andreas Nodl, Jon Kalinski, and Jared Ross all received NHL call-ups through the first two months of the season, Giroux remained with the Phantoms, leading all AHL rookies in scoring with 33 points in his first 17 games.[2] He was called up to the Flyers on December 24 to replace Scottie Upshall, who was out for two weeks with a knee injury, and made his NHL debut two days later in a 5–1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.[3] His first NHL point came on December 30, when Giroux recorded an assist during the Flyers' 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.[4] His first goal came the following month, pushing one past Tomáš Vokoun in the third period of a 3-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on January 27.[5][6]

Despite his team's elimination in the playoffs, Giroux was confident in the Flyers' success during the 2020–21 season.[7] On January 26, 2021, Giroux played his 611th game as captain of the Flyers, breaking a record set by Bobby Clarke in 1984.[8] Giroux's 328-game iron man streak was broken on February 18, when COVID-19 protocols prevented him from playing a game against the Rangers. It was the first time that neither Giroux nor Jakub Voráček were in the Flyers' lineup since March 1, 2009.[9] He returned on February 24, recording three assists in a 4-3 win over the Rangers.[10]

On March 19, 2022, Giroux was traded to the Florida Panthers. The Flyers also sent Connor Bunnaman, German Rubstov, and a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft to Florida and retained half of Giroux's salary, while they received Owen Tippett, a first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.[11]

Personal life

edit

Giroux married his wife Ryanne in July 2018. The wedding took place in Allentown, New Jersey, with many of Giroux's Flyers teammates in attendance.[12] The couple's first son, Gavin, was born on August 26, 2019.[13] Their second son, Palmer, was born on August 5, 2021.[14]

Giroux was arrested and spent the night of July 1, 2014, in jail after "repeatedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer" while under the influence of alcohol in the ByWard Market district of Ottawa.[15] No charges were filed, and Giroux apologized for his "misguided attempt at humor" during his Canada Day celebrations, but a photo that appeared to depict the rest briefl went viral on Twitter.[16]
