Conscription in Gibraltar existed throughout World War II, and through the 1950s and 1960s. The Gibraltar Regiment, the semi-independent British Army unit for the territory of Gibraltar, was unique in that it continued conscription until 1971, eleven years after conscription was done away with in the United Kingdom. Although conscription ended in 1971, the last soldier required to serve in the regiment under this policy did not leave duty until 1991.
