editby 1830 ithill is known as cantonment hill due the location of a military camp near by. It was a popular lookout over the fledgling settlement of Fremantle Robert Dale painted the view in 1830. Families of Indigenous prison held on Rottnest would send signals from the hill, the fires would aslo help those trying to escape.
