Medical Students for Choice is a US-based non-profit organization affiliated with the abortion rights movement. Medical Students for Choice (MSFC) was founded in 1993 by then medical student Jody Steinauer to ensure that medical students have access to comprehensive information and training regarding abortion procedures and reproductive healthcare. Individual chapters are comprised of medical students, nursing students, public health students, and other pre-professional healthcare students and work towards curriculum reform and in addition run educational extracurricular events. Currently there are 150 MSFC chapters, primarily in the United States but also in Canada, Cuba, Ireland, England, Bulgaria, Israel, India, Lebanon, and the Ukraine.
History
editIn 1993, an anonymous group sent anti-abortion pamphlets to medical students across the United States. These pamphlets included jokes about murdering abortion providers, for example "Q: What would you do if you were in a room with Hitler, Mussolini and an abortionist and you had a gun with only two bullets? A: Shoot the abortionist twice." [1] The same spring that these pamphlets were sent out, David Gunn was killed by Michael Frederick Griffin, a member of Rescue America a pro-life organization. Medical schools had begun omitting courses that dealt with abortion. These three conditions led to what is referred to as the "greying" or
