Wikipedia Data Page Example : Glasgow
editBelow is a list of groups and links to data about the city of Glasgow. When an agency creates a link about Glasgow's data here, it links to the their site, where they will be able to mould the request for information to their databases. The best example on this list is Department of Transport. This allows agencies gain another method to connect with their audience. The Example here is Glasgow, however we use Wikipedia as a subject index to point to the various locations of Statistics, Portals or raw data. We could also create a data page for any subject; for example Human_skin_color may lead to a picture of bell curve showing average skin colour in the world, Malaria may lead to World Health Organisation, we could also find the data for the MMR_vaccine, Education may point to a page outlining statistics from different countries
What does it solve
editIncreasing popularity and access to data worldwide on any subject, encouraging the presentation of complex data in a friendly manner
Explanation of examples
editLooking at the examples we are bringing together multiple agencies. Starting with European, UK, Scottish ,Regional, Local Governance at a high level and down exact locations of historical buildings from RCHAMS. This shows the wide variety of agencies who face the similar challenge of supplying and presenting Data. By focusing on the varied solutions by the different groups we share the learning experience.
On this page there are links to raw data, this may not be appropriate for the subject of Glasgow but it would be very relevant for other subjects and is why they are shown here. A good example of showing data is Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation:Glasgow. This shows a visualisation, explanation and leads to the raw data. The link would not change for updated data. This would encourage agencies to standardise their links to catagorised data. Standardised links will lead to Wikipedian editors adding it to their own subject pages.

How Big is the page
editA page like this could easily become overwhelmed by thousands of links. This poses a similar question as to how long a wikipedia article should be. Wikipedian editors will learn and adjust the page to make sure it is readable and relevent. For a complex example like Glasgow there will be more links to portals and less raw data. For more specific subjects there may be no portals and just data pages. It is the unique resource of wikipedian editors that make this possible.

editWhat to do next
editThe main scope of this page is to encourage exploration of the projects potential by discussion with as many agencies as possible. We understand that this solution is not of benefit to all agencies but would be of value alongside their own solutions.
Inspiration
editThe original idea was proposed by Bob Kerr--Centralamerica (talk) 13:32, 23 March 2014 (UTC) to help get funding from OpenGlasgow for a opendata community conference. Unfortunately the conference will unable to happen until next year. Most people understand the benefits to opendata the best quote heard was from Pippa Gardner from TSB "When you bring people and Data together, that is when the magic happens"
