Decarceration

Decarceration is the process of reducing involuntary inmates, prisoners or other people remanded to an asylum, hospital or other residential institution into the general public.

The term was coined in 1977 book by Professor Andrew T. Scull of The University of California-San Diego in his book decarceration: community treatment and the deviant; a radical view.

In decaraceration, Scull defined the word as "shorthand for a state-sponsored policy of closing down asylums, prisons and eformatiories..." Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). tags, these references will then appear here automatically -->
