BooksUp is a user script that finds, and helps you add, links to scanned copies of books and journals cited in an article. Proposed changes are loaded into the normal edit window so you can review and modify them before saving.
It is the wiki front end for the bup tool, which pre-computes the links; the script reads them through bup's API.
Installation
[edit]If you have the script-installer gadget, click the install button in the infobox (right). Otherwise, add the following line to your common.js and save, then bypass your browser cache (Ctrl+⇧ Shift+R).

Usage
[edit]Open any article; a BooksUp link appears in the Tools menu (it is also available while editing the wikitext). Click it to open the BooksUp panel.
Any suggestions for the current article are listed, each showing the current citation and the proposed one. The added link is shown in blue. Click it to open the scanned copy in a new tab and confirm it is the right source and page.
- Use the Add / Skip buttons under each suggestion to choose which to apply.
- Click Open in editor to load the accepted changes into the edit window (or Apply to editor if you are already editing). Review the diff with Show changes, adjust anything you like, and save. Edits are made under your own account name.
Finding articles
[edit]Only a small fraction of all articles have available suggestions, so the panel also lists Other articles with BooksUp suggestions available:
- Random — jump to a random article that has suggestions.
- My watchlist — list the articles on your watchlist that have suggestions.
- Browse worklist — the full list, on bup.toolforge.org.
Choosing a random or watchlist article takes you there with the panel already open.
Notes
[edit]- Nothing is saved automatically — every change goes through the edit window for your review first, and is attributed to your account.
- The underlying list is refreshed periodically, so a suggestion may occasionally no longer apply, and new suggestions may become available later.
