Sister Projects Interview: Meta-Wiki
- By OhanaUnited, 6 April, 2008
Wikipedia Signpost: What is the purpose of Meta-Wiki?
Greeves: Meta-Wiki was started in November 2001 under the name Meta-Wikipedia, to have a place where all meta content (ie. non-articles) could be stored. Now with over 250 Wikipedias and over 450 other projects, the wiki used to store pages related to more than one project. Things like the project portals (like wikipedia.org), inter-project policy, chapter creation, personal essays, Wikimania planning, and anything else that has to do Wikimedia yet has no home project (except for the MediaWiki software).
WS: How is Meta-Wiki different from other projects?
Greeves: All of the other projects create content whereas Meta-Wiki is only here to support those projects. Also, less people feel that Meta-Wiki is their "home project".
WS: Do you feel that Meta-Wiki is your "home project"?
Greeves: Sort of. I spend about as much time on both projects but I spend more time reading on Meta-Wiki than I do writing.
WS: What do you tend to do on Meta-Wiki?
Greeves: Like I said, I read a lot of discussion. I was also involved in the Communication Projects Group for a while (but they met during Wednesday afternoons in my time zones, so I could not make it) and I'm currently working to help start Wikimedia Canada (with you) as the Secretary of the Steering Committee.
