Project outline
edit- Name: Wikipedia Categories
- Why start this project? "After hitting difficulties when trying to categorise Category:Education in the United Kingdom I realised that there was no visible efforts to standardise the category system or manage it's growth on Wikipedia. Hopefully this project will go some way to help Wikipedia to become an extremely useful resource" Greg Robson 21:31, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Goals
edit"The big picture"
editLargely these ideals should be in the back of people's minds when working on the project:
- Brevity - Keeping things concise
- Usefulness - Making sure that what we do will be valuable to others
- Accuracy - Making sure all that we do is as accurate as possible
- Completeness - Ensuring that as little as possible slips through the net
- Standardisation - Developing and upholding standards to make Wikipedia authoritative
How will this be achieved
edit- Brevity
- Clean up of catergories (especially high level ones)
- Maintain optimal sizing of categories
- Usefulness
- Cross-referencing of related categories
- Assigning helpful and appropriate descriptions to categories
- Assist in categorising certain aspects of Wikipedia management
- Adding descriptions to categories
- Accuracy
- Assist in arbitrating categories for deletion
- Standardisation
- Create standards for time, the labelling of places etc
- Encourage the Wiki-community to help in maintaining the category namespace
- Tidying up
- Removal of unnecessary "Lists of ..." articles
- Standardising the use of countries/regions
- Standardising sort order for names, places etc
- Reducing maintenance
- Attempt to map the category namespace in some visual way
- Redirection to avoid duplication
Scope
editA definition of all the areas of wikipedia this project aims to cover to begin with - although people should feel free to get stuck in and help wherever possible!
- On the English Wikipedia...
- All pages in the category namspace
- Articles that are "Lists of..."
- The category declarations of all articles
- Categorising the 100,000+ images that Wikipedia has.

Skills required
edit- Attention to detail
- Desire to learn about new fields of interest
- No fear of doing grunt work - many of the alterations will take time
Structure
editThis is not set in stone - but I believe it's a good start at least.
- The project will be trying to establish common themes in the structure that are repeated (countries/regions, naming schemes) that need to be standardised.
- Tidying of categories (with reassignment of articles as required).
- Assigning of all articles to an appropriate category.
Useful Pages
editFeel free to add sub-categories and new links to those pages that you believe will assist those helping with this project.
