Chandra Kumar Dong (Nepali: चन्द्र कुमार दोङ ) Born on 31 November 1964, professionally known as Chandra Kumar Dong, is a Nepali music composer, singer, lyricist, and music arranger primarily of Tamang Selo music. Mr. Dong is one of the greatest, most influential, and versatile singers as well as a music composer who revolutionized Tamang music at large and contributed untiringly and consistently in both Tamang and Nepali music. Moreover, he is known as the ‘King of Tamang Selo’ and he has already composed thousands of Tamang and Nepali songs to date and his songs have become popular among people of all ages and gender. He won three awards consecutively entitled ‘Best song of the year Tamang Bhasa from 2005 to 2007’ awarded by Image channel along with Indira Ghole Gurung and Sashikala Moktan. He is the first modern and pop music composer of Tamang song and his songs are equally popular in Nepal and overseas.
Early life and family background
editDong was born into a Tamang family on 31 November 1964 in Mukpaa village, Kavrepalanchowk district. Chandra Kumar Dong and his family were originally from Mukpaa, a small village in Kavrepalanchok. He has a step-mother as his father, Gajabir Dong, married two wives. He is the only son of the mother Saili Tamang. Unlike other people in his village, both his father and mother adopted farming as the main occupation and they sustained their life. When he was grown up, he married Chandra Maya Tamang in 1979 at a young age and left his village, and moved to Kathmandu in 1981. He has four children including two sons and two daughters.
Career
editDong started his musical career at the age of 22. Initially, he was trained by Dipendra Man Singh from 1989 to 1990 and late Gopal Yonzon from 1990 to 1995. Dong has released several Tamang and Nepali folk, modern, and pop albums. His first album is Tamang Hwai which was recorded in 1990. He gave the solo album 4 nos, Music composition – 22 Nos, in combination – 12 Nos. His largest selling album is- Ko Mendo (Tamang Folk album) – 1994 which was distributed by Master Recordings.
Concerts and Programs
editDong performed a solo concert - Sangitik Ramjam Sanjh – 2003 organized by Tamang Dajang, Kathmandu. And also he has performed many musical and cultural programs in various cities and parts of Nepal. Additionally, he has performed the cultural program in Bhutan-2002, Qatar-2009, Malaysia-2010, Dubai-2010, 2012, Hongkong-2012, Bahrain, South Korea, Japan, Israel-2020, Europe Tour-2020 He also performed in India – Assam, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Sikkim.
