Project Topics and Links
edit1. Please investigate these pages through the links below, then use outside sources to determine if you can find enough information on the topic to warrant expansion into a substantial (more than 6 paragraphs of new information) Wikipedia entry. If its a chemical, make sure to follow chemistry page guidelines.
Pick a few you are interested in and explore. You are welcome to propose other topics, too. We'll discuss in class on Tuesday 2/10/15.
- plastic_particle_water_pollution AND microplastics AND plastic pollution Have inter-related content that needs expanding and they fail to incorporate sufficient information about tiny plastic ending up incorporated into animals and causing problems.
- nonylphenol_ethoxylates AND nonoxynol have stub entries and need to be substantially expanded to include environmental health issues. Nonoxynol is used in spermicidal jelly.
- pyrethrin is a start class article and doesn't include sufficient information on health effects at low doses.
- Coumestrol is a natural organic compound in the class of phytochemicals known as coumestans. It has garnered research interest because of its estrogenic activity and its prevalence in some foods, such as soybeans. Start class article.
- Dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate or Dacthal, WWF list of pesticides in the environment reported to have reproductive and/or endocrine disrupting effects. Is there more secondary source info on this?
- toxaphene Insecticide that was banned, and is bioaccumalative and a POP. Might be an EDC- worth looking into. I'm curious.
- Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene aka DDE, a breakdown product of DDT. Start class article that could use a lot of work. Check out the DDT page for an idea of how much this page could be expanded. Are there sufficient secondary sources? Should be, as its been found in fat of all kinds of wildlife and suspected EDC.
- Endrin Another pesticide page that is start class, and needs a lot of work. Also an endocrine disruptor.
- Bisphenol S Our BPA alternative has a relatively undeveloped (start class) wikipedia page! See if you can find reliable secondary sources before taking this one on. Can't really add primary sources.
- Ziram A thio amino carbonyl fungicide also used in rubber and latex production. See the ChemSec link to SIN articles on our course Canvas General Resources page for more information. Ziram belongs to the group Thioaminocarbonyl compounds.
- Silver nanoparticle" Silver nanoparticles, in all kinds of stuff, and with uncertain effects when the silver is so small it can cross through cellular membranes. Article is C class, and can use a lot of work.
- Chloropicrin Used to be used on battlefield, now used as pesticide on strawberries. Start class article and clearly needs a lot of work.
