The Morning and Evening Remembrances (Athkar) , is a group of supplications that the Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him said and invited to recite every morning and evening. It was reported from Muslim scholars that they are desirable and Sunnah of the Prophet Mohammad. The Sunnah is to recite the morning remembrances before sunrise and the evening remembrances before sunset.
Definition
editThey are verses from the Great Qur'an, the supplications in Qur'an and Hadith and glorifications that were all mentioned in a specific way, at specific times and in specific and fixed numbers in the sayings of the Prophet Mohammad. Each or some of them is repeated every day according to the number and time specified for it.
Rules of Remembrances
editThe morning and evening remembrances are Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, and it is a desirable Sunnah, and it is not obligatory. According to jurisprudence of Muslim scholars, it is permissible for the one who missed the morning remembrances to make up for them in a time other than their time. It is not required to read them in order, or not to interrupt them with some work; it is also not necessary to come up with the aphorisms and the remembrances stated all, rather it is permissible to limit them to some, and to what is facilitated from them without specifying, because there is no text from the Prophet Mohammad indicating the necessity of that, and there is also nothing wrong with a Muslim saying the remembrances while he is ritually impure whether his ritual impurity is the minor or the major one, and they are not prescribed to be read collectively, rather they are read individually, and it is desirable for the Muslim to occupy himself with remembrance and supplication in a day and night, because of the Almighty’s saying: "So be patient over what they say and exalt [ Allah ] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied."
Times of Remembrances
editIt can be said that the time for reading the morning remembrances (Athkar) starts from the dawn prayer until the time of the noonday, and the time for reading the evening remembrances (Athkar) starts from the time of noonday until midnight, and that is due to the different opinions of Muslim scholars in determining the times of the morning and evening remembrances; some of them said that the time for the morning remembrances is from dawn until sunrise, and others say that it ends with the end of the forenoon time. As for the evening remembrances, it starts from the afternoon (Al-Aser) and ends at sunset, and others say that the beginning of the remembrance is after sunset until midnight. Other opinions say that the time for the morning remembrances is either after or before the dawn prayer or after the sun rises, and the time for reading the evening remembrances is at the end of the day and the beginning of the night.
The Remembrances
editThere have been many Hadiths of the Prophet that include the remembrances and supplications that are mentioned every morning and evening. Many books and booklets have collected these remembrances or some of them. The most famous of which are: the book “The Selected Remembrances from the Words of the Righteous Master” by Al-Nawawi, and the book “The Good Words” by Ibn Taymiyyah. And the book “Al-Wabil Al-Sayib” by Ibn Al-Qayyim. And a booklet Fortress of the Muslim by Saeed bin Ali bin Wahf Al-Qahtani. Al-Nawawi said in his book "The Selected Remembrances from the Words of the Righteous Master": “The chapter on what is said in the morning and evening: know that this chapter is very broad, and there is no chapter in the book that is broader than it. I mention, if Allah wills, in it a few of its abbreviations. Whoever is successful in doing all of them, then it is a blessing and favor from Allah Almighty upon him and blessed be upon him, and whoever is unable to do all of them, let him limit to their abbreviations to whatever he wants, even if it is a single remembrance.
Virtues of Remembrances
editIt came in the prophet's hadith agreed on: "The parable of one who remembers his Lord and one who does not remember Him, is like that of the living and the dead." So the life or death of hearts and the construction or ruin of homes are linked to the remembrance of ِAllah or to the negligence of Him. Ibn al-Qayyim said in its explanation: “This is because the more negligence in the heart intensifies, the harsher it becomes. If Allah Almighty is mentioned, that cruelty will melt as lead melts in fire." He said: “So not the hardening of hearts is softened as by the remembrance of Allah Almighty.” [[Category:Islamic terminology]] [[Category:Islamic prayer]]
