Enchi (band)
editEnchi, a Filipino reggae band from Dumaguete City led by frontman and lead guitarist Bembem, has been a vibrant force in the Philippine reggae scene since 2001. Formed by a group of high school friends inspired to spread reggae’s positive energy, Enchi quickly became Dumaguete’s first homegrown reggae band. Their roots are deeply intertwined with Reggae Wednesday at Hayahay Treehouse Bar—a seaside haven where students, locals, tourists, and artists gather weekly to dance to Enchi’s upbeat rhythms. Singing primarily in Cebuano and Tagalog, Enchi’s songs celebrate love, friendship, and the laid-back island lifestyle, with tracks like "Istambay" encouraging peaceful, harmonious living.
Nationally recognized in 2004, Enchi contributed two songs, "Ngano" and "Tsinelas," to Island Riddims, a reggae compilation by Galaxy Records spearheaded by Papa Dom Gamboa (1965-2013) of Tropical Depression and Budoy of Junior Kilat. The success of this release led to their debut album, Dungagi Ni…, also under Galaxy Records, followed by Kinsa Ko? in 2012, which featured fan favorites like "Istambay," "Baboy," and "Baso." Their music video for "Lab Stori," their first, earned play on MYX and MTV, broadening their reach and gaining fans across the country.
Over the years, Enchi’s influence has extended beyond Dumaguete, bringing their unique sound to cities across the Visayas and Mindanao, including Bacolod, Tacloban, and Dipolog. They’ve also taken the stage with top OPM artists like Tropical Depression, Indio I, Junior Kilat, Brownbeat All Stars, Brownman Revival, and Peace Pipe, while their festival appearances at events like Bob Marley Day[1] and Rasta Claus have secured their place in the Philippine reggae landscape.
Today, Enchi’s music—including singles such as "Isda" (2016), "Panahon sa Maayo Nga Pasko" (2017), "Ako Na Ka" (2019), and a 2023 acoustic version of "Istambay"—is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Through their continued performances at Reggae Wednesdays and out-of-town gigs, Enchi’s journey from high school friends to reggae icons has grown into a mission to spread love, peace, and positive vibes, uniting people through music that resonates with the heart and spirit of island life.
