Badlands Unlimited is a New York-based independent publisher founded by the artist Paul Chan (artist) in 2010, and consists of artists Ian Cheng, Micaela Durand, and Matthew So. The press publishes texts by and with other artists in the form of paperbacks, ebooks, digital group exhibitions, a stone book, and other various media. The press also does consulting on projects related to digital publishing for art institutions.

History

edit

The catalog of Badlands' publications consists of early, titles primarily focused on Chan's past work and activities as an artist. Since 2011, Badlands has primarily focused on modern and contemporary figures in the art world. The press participated in Printed Matter, Inc's 2012 NY Art Book Fair as the event's first primarily digital publisher.[1]

Projects

edit

Holiday, a book written by Paul Chan, was published on a stone slab and as an e-book in 2012.

Badlands curated a small installation, "Think Like Clouds," at the 2013 NY Art Book Fair. The exhibition showcases the drawings, diagrams, and notes of curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, on the occasion of the publication of the book with the same name, Think Like Clouds.[2]

How to download a boyfriend, a 2012 curated group show in the form of a downloadable e-book, was the first art exhibition for the ipad. [3]

Controversy

edit

Badlands and publisher Paul Chan have been accused of weakening the market of analog printed art books with his direction of a primarily e-book-foucsed small press.[13][14]
