Southern Secession Period

[edit source]

The Southern Secession Period (December 20th, 1860 - June 8th, 1861) was a chaotic part of United States history that occurred while 11 states in the southern portion of the US were actively seceding from the Union and uniting into the Confederate States of America (also known as "The Confederacy" or "The South"). It was the final stage of the Antebellum Period. It began with the secession of South Carolina and ended with the secession of Tennessee.

Background

[edit source]

15 states in the United States had legalized race-based chattel slavery. These so-called "slave states" were opposed to the politicianAbraham Lincoln, as he was against the spread of the institution. The slave states had, however, already become economically dependent on slavery, and were notably extremely racist. After his victory at the 1860 election fearing that Lincoln would change their way of life, 11 of the slave states one-by-one seceded from the US to fruitlessly escape the outlawing of slavery that they feared was coming. The 4 states that refused to secede were titled "border states".

After Lincoln's election, secessionists implemented plans to leave the Union before he took office in March 1861.
