Sasane(ससाने / ससाणे / ಸಾಸನೆ / ససనే ) is a surname mostly used in states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and some parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. This surname is primarily used under Hindu sect only. Majority of the population having this surname belongs to Hindu-Joshi sect of Hinduism.^[1]. The other main sect is Hindu - Maali which consists a very small portion of this Surname concentrated in Maharashtra only.People who live in Southern Maharashtra areas of Belgaum, Kolhapur, Solapur, Bidar are primarily of Hindu-Joshi sect. The population which dispersed during rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh belong to the Joshi sub-caste of Hinduism. This caste is believed to have revolutionized "Ved-pathan" in villages during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

 It is believed the staunch uproar of Hindu-Joshi's in Kolhapur province of India led to revolutionize the way Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj reigned. Worship of "Mahalaxmi" and practising in Ved-Pathshalas and spreading the knowledge is a core value of this community.
