41°42′13″N 71°31′35″W / 41.70361°N 71.52639°W The Arctic Playhouse is a non-profit theater in West Warwick, Rhode Island. It is currently housed in a storefront in the village of Arctic, Rhode Island.
History
editThe Arctic Playhouse evolved from the highly successful ‘Daydream Theater Company’ that was founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 2002.[1] In 2014, Daydream Theater Company was looking for a new, larger location. A venue was secured[2] in Arctic Village, West Warwick, a once-thriving arts community that had abundant storefront space available.[3] This location became home to The Arctic Playhouse, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Arctic Playhouse founders transformed this venue[4] into a functional, aesthetically pleasing 90-seat capacity neighborhood theater that offered affordable ticket prices.[5] "Whereas the other theaters charge around $50 a ticket (which is a bargain), little Arctic charges only $10 (now $13) for its own productions. That should be sent to the Guinness Book of World Records for theater ticket prices."[6] The Arctic Playhouse has had the opportunity to engage the community in the performing arts by hosting open auditions, providing a venue for local artists to work their craft, and allowing a growing and active community to be involved in the theater.[7]
Mission
editThe Arctic Playhouse mission is to provide the community with affordable access to the performing arts in a variety of genres and styles, while fostering the growth of developing artists.[8]
Future
editTAP has acquired the former Maxine’s Department Store[9] close by at 1249 Main St., which will be the new home of The Arctic Playhouse, following a $1.5-million renovation[10] that will give the theater company room to grow. “At the current location, the playhouse has 90 seats. On Main Street, it will have between 150 and 175 seats... One of the things that we feel really strongly about here is to keep our ticket prices low,” said board member Lloyd Felix.[11] Architect rendition of the future home of TAP.
