Photron started business in 1974, engaged in manufacturing, sales and service of professional film, video equipment and photo-instrumentation. PHOTRON's name was created from the combination of photon and electron, the cornerstone of the company's technologies. Currently, Photron has expanded into photo optics and advanced electronic technologies. Products can be found in manufacturing industries, medical field, film laboratories, major movie and television studios, as well as military programs worldwide.
Photron has extensive background and end-user knowledge of image processing systems. Photron leverage this technical portfolio into designing of high-speed motion analysis cameras. A few of the technologically advances made at Photron include:
- World's fastest commercial high-speed video system, introduced in 1991 the Model 4540 that operated up to 40,500 frames per second.
- Best-selling high-speed video system, introduced 1992, the MotionCorder family of cameras, including the FASTCAM Super 10k operating up to 10,000 frames per second.
- First mega-pixel CMOS camera system, introduced in 2000, the FASTCAM-X 1280 PCI designed for the PC and operated up to 32,000 frames per second.[1]
- Photron introduces in 2003 a highly portable, very sensitive to light, compact high speed camera, Ultima 512 that operates at 512 x 512 x 2000 frames per second.[2]
- The FocusScope signifies Photron's commitment to using it's high-speed abilities for different applications with a 1,000 fps high speed camera being used to produce thirty frames per second of drastically improved depth of focus from a conventionally mounted microscope camera.
- World’s smallest high-speed camera, the FASTCAM MH-4 introduced Nov 1, 2006 at the Automotive Testing Expo and received in 2007 “Crash Test Innovation of the Year” award from Automotive Test Technology International. [3]The camera is a 1.5-inch cube and operates at 512 pixels x 512 pixels at 2000 fps.
- Introduced April 14, 2008 Photron’s highest resolution high speed camera, FASTCAM SA2 operating at 2048 pixels x 2048 pixels x 1000 frames per second at 12 bits pixel depth. [4]
- World’s fastest high speed camera, introduced Jan 21, 2009, the FASTCAM SA5 operating at 1024 pixels x 1024 Pixels x 7500 frames per second at 12 bits pixel depth. [5]
Photron has strived to provide a wide variety of high-speed cameras to meet the various needs of the diverse applications found in the market.
Photron also markets under the Primatte trade name, software for the motion-picture and television industries which they had developed. Primatte software is used to create seamless and realistic chromakey composting effects.
