Chappy is a dating app launched in 2017, targeted at anyone who wants to date a gay man. Available to download from the App Store and Google Play store. It operates on iOS and Android. Chappy is free to download, offering all services at no extra cost - there is also no advertising within the app. Chappy has a unique 'Chappy Scale' functionality allowing users to choose between 'Mr. Right', 'Mr. Who Knows' and 'Mr. Right Now' searches whenever they want. Users can send Sparks to others users however, this functionality is limited to one per day.
All Chappy profiles pictures must show a face, profile names and ages are migrated from Facebook and there is no traditional grid display. Instead, Chappy adopts a swipe function, left for 'not interested' and right for ‘interested’ and a possible match.
Chappy positions itself as the first gay dating app as it offers users the opportunity to find something more long-term than other apps on the market. Chappy also positions itself as a ‘safer’, more ‘transparent’ and ‘accountable’ space.
In October, November and December 2017, Chappy was the third most downloaded gay dating app in the US and UK across Google Play and the App Store.
