Other information | Function is to move article talk pages currently in Wikipedia requested photographs of people into sub-categories so that the number of articles in a specific category are of a manageable number. |
This user account is a bot that uses AutoWikiBrowser, operated by Traveler100 (talk). It is used to make repetitive automated or semi-automated edits that would be extremely tedious to do manually, in accordance with the bot policy. This bot does not yet have the approval of the community, or approval has been withdrawn or expired, and therefore shouldn't be making edits that appear to be unassisted except in the operator's or its own user and user talk space. To stop this bot until restarted by the bot's owner, edit its talk page. If that page is a redirect, edit that original redirecting page, not the target of the redirect. Administrators: if this bot is making edits that appear to be unassisted to pages not in the operator's or its own userspace, please block it or remove from the approved accounts. |
Situation
editThere are a large number of requests for photographs some requests are currently in very large categories. For example Category:Plant articles needing photos has over 16,000 requests, Category:Rail transport articles needing images has over 7,000 requests and Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Italy has over 6000 requests. Other task such as moving contents of Category:WikiProject Cities articles needing photographs to the appropriate location photo request category; extracting USA, Germany and UK requests from Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of military history to more specific categories.
As these categories are so large no one is going to work through these lists. The size makes it difficult to uses tools such as FIST - Free Image Search Tool and Image checker
Proposal
editIf these lists were split into smaller categories based on a specific topics it would increase the likelihood of someone addressing these requests. It would also make it easy to work through looking for fulfilled requests or images on other wiki sites.
This should be achieved by removing the need-photo=yes tag from the project template and adding the {{Image requested}} template with appropriate classification or refining the current {{Image requested}} parameter.
Specification
editUse AWB automatic bot user in bot mode to
- Go through article talk pages in
- a specific category
- If article talk page contains the WikiProject
- removed yes y 1 from need-photo = parameter in WPBiography template
- If reqphoto template exists on the talk page
- add to reqphoto template category shown in list for the WikiProject found.
- else
- add reqphoto template with category.
- The bot will also change reqphoto and other derivatives to Image requested
It will use as basis the source used for a number of years with Semi-automatic wiki browser but with options switched off to ensure edits are specific and restricted. And techniques developed withUser:People-photo-bot and User:People-n-photo-bot.
Notification
editDiscussion for specific large moves will be made beforehand in the appropriate WikiProject pages.

Comments
editThis bot recently added an image needed tag at Commelina tuberosa, but the article already has a good image. You may want to make sure this error hasn't occurred elsewhere. DJLayton4 (talk) 13:54, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- not actually an error. I am moving these requests from a list that is difficult to scan for fulfilled requests. Once I have moved all the articles in the list to the category I will then scan it for articles with images. --Traveler100 (talk) 15:17, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
