Prof (Dr) Gautam Sen is an eminent Medical Academician in India and a Surgeon by profession. Considered a "thought leader", he has led many initiatives to improve healthcare delivery in varied disciplines of medicine.
Professor Gautam Sen is Chairman and co-founder of Healthspring1, which he set up with his son, Kaushik Sen (CEO)1, intending to bring high-quality primary care to India and to transform Indian healthcare delivery. With over four decades of experience practising General Surgery and Surgical Oncology and teaching, he is a Professor Emeritus of Surgery at Grant Medical College1,3,4,5 University of Bombay (Retired in 2005)
Education & Career:
Professor Gautam Sen had his schooling and early college education in a small town in Maharashtra3 State, Amalner, where his father Dr Anish Ranjan Sen was a pioneering surgeon. Prof Sen was inspired by his father, who served the deprived population of the Khandesh region.
Professor Sen gained admission to the prestigious Grant Medical College1,3,4,5,6, India's oldest medical school. After passing MBBS (1964), he worked as a surgical trainee (House Surgeon and Registrar) in JJ Group of Hospitals under the same College, in various departments and under legendary Surgeons at that period, namely Dr Hiralal Doctor, Dr N G Mehta, Dr N H Antia and Dr Joshipura obtaining an MS (Master of Surgery) degree in 1967.
From 1967-1969, he worked under the renowned cancer surgeon Dr Ernest Borges at Tata Memorial Hospital.
In 1969, he went to the UK and worked in NHS Hospitals as a senior house officer, Registrar and Senior Registrar respectively. He obtained an FRCS degree from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 19721,3. He developed an interest in Trauma and Accident Services development at Royal Preston Hospital, which later prompted him to establish the Association for Trauma Care of India.1,3,4,5,7
Inspired by his father's lifetime services, he returned to India in late 1975. Despite a promising career in the UK, he chose to settle in Bombay and joined Grant Medical College as a Scientific Pool Officer, eventually becoming Professor Emeritus of Surgery. He has been a great teacher, trainer, and mentor to numerous students, many of whom are now specialists in India and abroad.
He has been an Examiner for MBBS MS for the University of Bombay. He became an Examiner for FRCS and later for MRCS, for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He also served as a Postgraduate Examiner for MS for the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital, Nepal.
He was an Inspector for the National Board of Examination and its Examiner in Surgery.
He has served the Association of Surgeons of India3,8 as Founder Director of Surgical Studies since 2010. This post was specially created for him.
National Impact:
Prof Sen has been instrumental in establishing several national organizations, including the Association For Trauma Care of India (1982), the Indian Chapter of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1985)3,4,7,9,10 the Healthcare International Medical Foundation (2003), and the College of Surgeons of India (2010). He was the Founder Director of Surgical Studies at the Association of Surgeons of India 3,7,8 since 2010.
He pioneered Emergency Medical Services in India, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from Life Line Foundation and American College of Emergency Physicians of Indian Origin and Emergency Medicine India.
Under his guidance, Association For Trauma Care of India (ATCI) pioneered some of the most innovative and successful emergency response systems in India, like the "Golden Hour Project"3,4,5,11- India's first wireless controlled Ambulance Service set up in 1985, which was inaugurated by Smt Sonia Gandhi in the presence of then Prime Minister Mr Rajiv Gandhi. ATCI introduced the ATLS (R) Course of the American College of Surgeons in 2007 in India.
For the last 30 years, he has set up and run a ground breaking primary care system providing care to the rural tribal population in Radhanagari, Kolhapur District, Maharashtra which continues to be one of the most successful and respected not-for-profit models of healthcare provision. (RSGVP Trust)

Personal Life
Professor Gautam Sen grew up in Amalner, Maharashtra, inspired by his father, Dr. Anish Ranjan Sen, a pioneering surgeon dedicated to serving the underserved. This dedication left a lasting impact on Professor Sen. He is considered to be one of the most respected surgeons and leading medical thinkers in India and he has been instrumental in several pioneering efforts to bring changes to healthcare delivery in India. For the last 20 years, he has been Chairman of a Public Charitable Trust called RSGVP (Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Grameen Vikas Prakalp), which provides comprehensive primary care to a 1.5 lac population in a rural, tribal area called Radhanagri. Bringing good healthcare to these villagers and shepherds, who had absolutely no recourse to healthcare before it was set up. He has demonstrated with RSGVP that a rural primary healthcare model is possible and viable. He is married to Karabi, and they have a son together, Kaushik.
