The Van Horne Underpass aka Van Horne, The Underpass, Under the Bridge, or Viaduc Van Horne in French, was a DIY music venue located next to the Viaduc Van Horne Skatepark in the Mile-End Neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec.
History
[edit]The Viaduc Van Horne Skatepark was constructed underneath the Van Horne Overpass in 2019 as a third space for young people in the neighbourhood.[1][2]. After the Covid-19 pandemic the park started to be used as a DIY venue for local Punk/Hardcore bands[3]. Due to the fact that many venues across Montreal had either closed during the pandemic or were struggling at the time[4] [5], the Underpass soon became a favourite amongst local and touring bands due to its almost limitless capacity and DIY nature, eventually becoming synonymous with the Punk and DIY music scene itself. Colloquially, the Underpass was a legendary venue and beloved by the Montreal music Scene. Bands that it hosted include Rent Strike, Seum, RatPiss, and more[6]. Videos of performances held at the underpass are available on YouTube [7] [8].
Eventual closure
[edit]In Summer of 2025, after several years as a DIY venue, the SPVM reportedly began arriving at the Underpass before shows could begin and shutting them down. Although some shows had been shut down at the Underpass before, police began to make it clear that they were aware that shows were being held there and they would no longer be allowed to continue[9].
The closure of the Underpass as a venue came around the same time as noise complaints began to affect venues across Montreal[10]. In 2025 two well established venues in Montreal, Blue Dog and Cabaret La Tulipe, were reportedly forced to close down due to numerous noise complaints and fines[11]
