The Word is a British cooperative-owned, left-wing, tabloid newspaper publication, launched on 27 May 2016. It is aimed at all demographics, and its stated intention is to counter the recent monopoly of the tabloid news industry that has been held by the far-right, the right wing the Conservative and Unionist Party, and media moguls such as the Murdoch family.[citation needed]

History

edit

The Word was founded as a cooperative news publication in 2016, in response to public concern regarding a perceived monopoly held by the right wing of British politics on the country's media.

The movement grew out of the Labour Party membership in Manchester, and was launched by a mixed staff of professional journalists and members of the general public. The majority of the publication's staff are supporters of the Labour Party, along with the Green Party, however, the official political stance is party-neutral.

The first edition will go on sale at the Tolpuddle festival on 15, 16, and 17 July 2016. Subscriptions will be taken on these dates and the publication will then be available on a weekly basis.
