Francesco "Don Ciccio" Messina Denaro was born in Castelvetrano, in the province of Trapani, Sicily in 1920.
He started as a campiere (armed guard) for the D’Ali family, who were wealthy landowners in the area. He eventually became a fattore (caretaker) of the D'Ali land holdings and received a significant estate from them in the Zangara area of Castelvetrano. The land was in actual fact, honored over to Salvatore Riina, the head of the Corleonesi family, with whom Messina Denaro was allied.
