US Army Information Operations is a dynamic element in US contigency operations. The role of information and impact is has on contigency operation has increased since the war in Iraq. US Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers are called to affect public opinion and help shape operations.
Definition
editInformation is an element of combat power. Commanders conduct information operations (IO) to apply it. Focused IO—synchronized with effective Information/Knowledge Management (IM) and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) - enable commanders to gain and maintain information superiority (IS).
ISR + IM + IO = IS
Information Superiority is the operational advantage derived from the ability to collect, process, and disseminate an uninterrupted flow of information while exploiting or denying an adversary’s ability to do the same. (FM 3-0)
Organization Structure
editUS Army Reserve has two of the five Theater Information Operations Groups (TIOG) and three TIOGs are in the National Guards. Each TIOG is structured similarly. US Army Reserve has one on the east coast and the other on the west coast continental United States. The 152nd TIOG has two subordinate battalions: 303rd Information Operations Battalion (Field Support Battalion) and the 304th Information Operations Battalion (General Support Battalion).
