Jean-Paul Chavas (born in 1951) is a French economist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (USA). He is a leading scholar in the field of agricultural economics.

Biography

A native of France, Jean-Paul Chavas earned an undergraduate degree from the Institut Supérieur d'Agriculture Rhone-Alpes (ISARA) and the University of Lyon in 1972. After spending two years teaching in Madagascar, he earned his PH.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1978. He was assistant professor in agricultural economics at Texas A&M University from 1978 to 1982. He joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1982. He has received numerous Awards for his research and teaching on the economics of agriculture. He was named a Fellow of the American Applied Economic Association in 1994.

Research

Over the years, Jean-Paul Chavas has conducted research on the economics of agriculture, with a focus on production, markets, consumption, risk and agricultural policy. Since receiving his PhD, Chavas has published around 5 articles per year in major journals, writing on such diverse topics as chaos theory and nonlinear dynamics, econometric methods, nonparametric analysis, welfare analysis under uncertainty, demand and supply estimation, decision making under risk, farm and food policy, environmental and welfare economics, economic development, and agricultural marketing. His largest contributions have been in the areas of decision making under risk, the dynamic nature of agricultural markets, and nonparametric testing of production and consumption behavior.
