About me

edit

I am a high school student who was born in the Philippines and now lives in the state of Washington. During times when I am not preoccupied with schoolwork, I listen to music, and I recently got back into reading. Although I enjoy listening to a wide range of tunes, like rap, pop, jazz, and indie music, an artist that takes up two thirds of my "All Time" playlist on Spotify is Kanye West. I admire his unique discography and the exceptional melodic energy that emanates through his songs. As for reading, I revel in dystopian and contemporary romance novels. Other things about me: my favorite food is French fries, specifically the cheddar fries from Potato Corner. Despite its obvious unhealthy properties, a modification like leaving the potato skin on French fries can be a source of vitamins for the body. [1]

My Wikipedia activities

edit

In the future, I would like to expand my knowledge on the use of Wikipedia and find reliable pages that relate to my studies and personal interests. I expect to sufficiently utilize this website when needed in order to complete assignments. In addition, I see myself researching notable artists, authors, and other personalities using Wikipedia. Lastly, if given the chance, I would like to edit some pages about topics I am well versed in.

Article Evaluation

edit

An acoustic band named MYMP has piqued my interest ever since I started listening to Original Pinoy Music (OPM). I am not fully acquainted with the history of the band so finding a page that features fair and accurate information about them is vital to expanding my grasp on this topic. Consequently, because of my limited knowledge, I visited the MYMP page on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: its apparent lack of citations, its insufficient amount of given information, and neutral stance on the topic.

Lack of Citations

edit

There are seven references linked within the page. However, only a few of those references are related to the central and most important information found under each subtopic. In the section "Early Career", a link to the band's debut album, an important element to the group's history, can be found. But generally, most of the relevant information are left as stand alone material without any trace of a credible source linked to them. For instance, in the same "Early Career" section, the detail stating a band member leaving, "...due to professional differences," does not lead to any external citation, therefore lacking validity. To build up its credibility, more references should be added and linked to the most relevant info on the page.

Incomplete Information

edit

The page consists of a few subtopics but only a couple major details can actually be found about the subject. The paragraphs are too condensed and terse. Because of its lack of substantial content, the page feels bare instead of being a site with thoroughly curated facts about the band MYMP. To illustrate, the first subtopic, "Origin", only consists of two short and simple sentences: one sentence stating how the band got its name and the other stating the names of the band members who were initially recruited. The writer could have elaborated more on the lives of the band members before MYMP came to be and how their paths crossed. Overall, this page is missing a lot of the key components an adequate research site would have.

Neutral Stance

edit

One thing, in my view, that this article got right is its effort in sustaining a neutral stance towards the topic. The information on the page at large are unbiased details about the band. This Wikipedia page does not try to push an agenda towards the reader. Instead, it highlights both their musical achievements as well as the inappropriate and undesirable side of the group. For instance, the success of the bands first concert is mentioned in the section "Versions and Beyond, Now (2005-2008)". On the other side of the spectrum, a vital information is disclosed at the bottom of the page: an MYMP band member partaking in racist behaviors. Noting the blackface controversy conveys a sense a neutrality; they are unafraid to expose the good and the bad elements of the subject.

Conclusion

edit

Overall, I think this page has a lot of potential to being a well established site. Currently, the page has a good structure to work with, so by adding references to featured facts and including significant information would make this page more conducive for research.
