Wikipedia Assignment 2:

In 2014, a hacker group called “Guardians of Peace” obtained some personal information on multiple employees of Sony Pictures.  This film studio was victim to the thievery of employees’ social security numbers, information about their families, unreleased cuts of Sony Pictures films and salaries of some executives.  This leak damaged Sony Pictures privacy, leading many to believe they were not safe with their information in the hands of the company.  The next year, Sony Pictures collected $15 million to put into fixing the leak, ultimately hurting its financial situation.

United States intelligence accused North Korean figures of heading the hack and the group.  While North Korea denied these accusations, many signs point to the North Koreans being behind this crime.

The hack took place around the same time The Interview was about to premiere.  This movie was a parody on North Korean culture and included the attempt and completion of murdering the country’s leader, Kim Jung-un.  The hacking group expressed their disapproval of the movie, ordering Sony Pictures to cancel the premiere or face the threat of terrorist attacks on movie theaters.  Sony Pictures took action by canceling the premiere and moved the release straight to the digital format.

The Wikipedia article “Sony Pictures hack” summarizes the events that took place and offers a lot of information on the background and result of the issue.  This article is supported by facts, which are placed as links whenever a fact is stated.  A reference sheet is provided at the end of the article, allowing readers to interact with the sources.  The author does a good job staying neutral and simply relaying the information on the hack.  The article focuses heavily on the threats of the movie The Interview, but it also highlights the legal issues Sony Pictures faced, as well as the repercussions the North Koreans had to deal with.

The reference list is very reliable, as it includes links to Sony Pictures press releases and articles in credible news outlets like CNN and The Guardian.  The overall list includes 121 references for readers to interact with.

At first glance, this article appears unbiased, but some references lean towards the side of Sony Pictures.  Many of these articles are quick to assume North Korea is responsible for the hack, and that may be so, but without proof that they definitely committed the hack, an author should not make accusations.  The author of the Wikipedia page takes those biased references and turns them into factual, unbiased information.

From this article, I learned that Wikipedia is a fine starting point for research, but it should never be a source in an essay, simply because anyone can edit or write their own Wikipedia article.  When taking note of a Wikipedia article, it is essential to check references and credibility before learning from the piece.

This Wikipedia article discusses the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services, which is a division of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise.  This subsidiary deals with the business and technology services.  This article does a fine job explaining the history and personnel behind this division.  It dives into how the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services was first started and also goes into its clients and locations.  However, the main point of this article is to describe what the services actually do. The “Services” are not listed out until the writer first talks about the other inferior facts.  The introduction is also lacking, where the writer should have done a better job appealing this article to the masses. Its description is difficult to understand, unless the reader is experienced in business and technology.  Overall, this article has some great information about the company and subsidiary, but it is not the essential information needed in order to fully understand what the services do.
