Breakup Season is a 2024 American independent comedy-drama feature film written and directed by H. Nelson Tracey and starring Chandler Riggs, Samantha Isler, James Urbaniak, and Jacob Wysocki.
The story centers on Ben and Cassie, a couple in their early 20s who travel to Ben's hometown of La Grande, Oregon to spend Christmas with Ben's family, but break up shortly after arriving, and end up trapped together through the holiday by a winter storm.[1]
The film had its world premiere at the Desertscape International Film Festival in St. George, Utah on March 29, 2024.[2] It was screened at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival[3] and RiverRun International Film Festival[4] in April of 2024, the Manhattan Film Festival[5] in July of 2024, and will be screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival in October of 2024.[6]
Plot
editBen (Chandler Riggs), an aspiring architect, and his girlfriend Cassie (Samantha Isler), are a couple in their early 20's who live in Los Angeles, and travel to Ben's hometown of La Grande, a small city in Eastern Oregon, to spend Christmas with his family. On the drive from the airport, Cassie expresses that she is a bit nervous about meeting Ben's family for the first time, but Ben reassures her that he's told them everything about her and that they already love her.
After they arrive, Cassie is introduced to the family, . After the family catches up on Ben and Cassie's life, Ben's father, Kirby (James Urbaniak), notices that Cassie isn't eating her food, and Cassie reveals that she is a vegetarian. Mia apologizes and says she would've made something different if she'd known. Ben then apologizes for not telling the family that Cassie is vegetarian, and then reveals that he is now also vegetarian. Ben's disagreeable older brother, Gordon (Jacob Wysocki), then starts asking Cassie pointed questions about her motives for vegetarianism, with the intent to argue her out of her position. Cassie handles the questions all on her own, and becomes visibly annoyed when Ben fails to make an effort to defend their choice.
After dinner, when Cassie and Ben are alone together, Cassie expresses frustration with Ben that he didn't tell his family that they were vegetarian. Ben apologizes again for forgetting, but dismisses the mistake as not a big deal and insists that they'll go shopping together the following day. Cassie accepts this mistake as an understandable oversight, and forgives him. However, she is still upset that he didn't stand up for her or himself when Gordon was being combative. Ben apologizes for this too, but suggests that Cassie shouldn't take it personally, and that Gordon is just a bitter 30-year-old who still lives at home and treats everyone this way.
Ben then tells Cassie he has a surprise for her, and reveals that he has been wearing a Santa-themed pair of boxer briefs all day. Cassie is only mildly amused, and feigns interest. Ben again apologizes that the night was so difficult, and starts trying to initiate sex.
Cassie feigns interest for a short time, but begins to feel alone, and realizes that she Cassie reveals that she has been unsure about this relationship for a while, and that she wants to break up. Ben argues, but
The following morning, Cassie and Ben try to book Cassie a flight to Chicago, to spend Christmas with her family, but discover that the highway to the airport in Pendleton has been shut down by a blizzard, and won't be open until December 29th

On Christmas Eve, Deadman pass reopens, and Ben discreetly orders a rental car for Cassie to drive one-way to Portland, finds her a flight from Portland to Chicago, and arranges for Sara to pick up Cassie from O'hare. She is surprised by his change in attitude and consideration, thanks him and his family, says her final goodbye, and leaves.
Several months later, Ben is back home in Oregon again, and Liz is heartbroken after being broken up with by Evan. Ben, having grown since his experience with Cassie, is able to comfort Liz, and Gordon reassures her that Evan was a weirdo anyway. It is revealed that Gordon is no longer living at home.

Production
editWriter and Director H. Nelson Tracey drew initial inspiration from the landscape of Eastern Oregon. In an interview with Deadline, Tracey recalled, “I first visited La Grande, Oregon in the fall of 2019 for the annual Eastern Oregon Film Festival... I immediately saw the Grande Ronde Valley as having untapped cinematic potential, and shortly thereafter began developing a project tailor-made for this location.”[7]
The casting of Riggs and Isler was announced in February, 2023[7], and filming was done on location in La Grande, Oregon in February of 2023.[8]

editBrandon Treadway of Cinemast wrote positively of the film, saying "[Breakup Season] flows effortlessly towards its final poignant moments, giving a finale that is as honest and hopeful as some of the great romantic dramedies of yesteryear and makes this one that is destined to become a favorite in line with classics like (500) Days of Summer."[1]
After the San Antonio Film Festival, R.C. Samo of Fanboy Nation wrote "First time Writer and Director H. Nelson Tracey hits a walk off grand slam with Breakup Season". He continues, "H. Nelson Tracey has presented an incredible film that most seasoned directors could not pull off for the [younger] Millennials/older Gen Z, audience, something very much appreciated by those in attendance at the San Antonio Film Festival (SAFilm)."[9]
The Port Townsend Film Festival Jury honored Breakup Season with a Commendation for screenwriting, noting "H Nelson Tracey's screenplay finds layers of unexpected nuance in all of its characters, no matter how big or small - giving everyone their own perspective on love, forgiveness, and how to heal from heartbreak. While the script takes inspiration from classic Hollywood holiday family dramedies, it also breaks with tradition and gives the audience surprising and unique turns along the way." [10]
