Joseph Bessie currently serves as a Professor of Philosophy at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he previously served as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. He worked at the University of Wisconsin Stout before coming to Moorhead. From May, 2009 through April, 2013, he was the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Saint Martin's University in Lacey, WA. Prior to that (2006 - 2009) he served as the VPAA at Valley City State University in Valley City, ND. From 2000 - 2006, he served as Dean of Instruction for Transfer Programs at Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN and, for ten years prior, as a philosophy professor at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK.
Dr. Bessie's specializations and interests include mathematical logic, the philosophy of science and, more recently, management ethics. He holds an M.B.A. in management from Southwest Minnesota State University (2003), a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota (1991), and a B.A. in philosophy and psychology from the University of California at Santa Cruz (1978). He is the author, with Stuart Glennan of Butler University, of an introduction to formal logic, Elements of Deductive Inference (Wadsworth publishing, 1999).
