Pope Leo XIV, born Peter Turkson, is a character in the Alchemy Cycle. Controversial for his adoption of radical Fransiscan theology concerning the poverty of Christ and the actions which flow from that theology, he comes to be widely regarded as the Antipope Peter II.

History

After his elevation to the papacy, Turkson reveals a secret Fransiscan affiliation, and sets about the dissolution of the Vatican through commercial sale of its assets. Money realised via this strategy is used to pay down African debt, and to provide development aid to both African and Latin American countries.

Papal name

Turkson is a resident of Rome, and initially considered not adopting a Papal name. This led to his being referred to as "Peter of Rome" (ie. Petrus Romanus).
