editSurya's next film, after Hari's Singam 2, was supposed to be Dhruva Nakchatriam, an action thriller film to be directed and produced by Gautham Vasudev Menon, however, Surya decided to drop the project after Gautham Menon took too long to hand any form of script to him therefore moving on to Lingusamy's Untitled Project. However Surya still wanted to work with Gautham Menon, but he recommened working with his assistant director Rishikanth due to being taken up by other commitments. Rishikanth discussed the script with Surya who was amazed by the storyline, and he accepted immedietlely. The film was finalised to be a co-production of Eros Entertainment and Media One Global. With regards to the film's title, Rishikanth claimed that it drew reference to the song Girlfriend by A.R Rahman which was a song that he listened mostly through his college and school days. The teenage protagnist Harish trained with co-star Surya Sivakumar to devolp six-pack abs in a 2 month fitness regime, but however had to contain shoulder and chest muscle growth to have a skinny look to fit a 16 year old boy. This look was required to fit into the character of a typical popular British-Indian school boy according to Rishikanth.
Casting
editFor the teenage protagnist, director Rishikanth noticed Harish on an Asian singing show in the UK and thought he would be perfect for the role if he made a few adjusments to his look. For the female lead role,Deepika Padukone was initially approached, but sources confirmed later that she was not part of the film. It was then rumoured that Asin Thottumkal and Vidya Balan were being considered for the role, since producers preferred a Bollywood actress. Rishikanth approached Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif in January 2012, who was not able to give her dates and the team reapproached Balan. Despite reports that Kaif was finalised, Kajal Agarwal, took up the offer to pair Surya for the second time after Maattrraan. Agarwal was paid a salary of INR3 crore (US$460,000) for shooting only for two days in the film. Prakash Raj and Simran were both Surya's choices to play in the movie. Amy Jackson is expected to play a teenage girl in the film as sources indicated that she was sporting a school girl look; the rest of the overseas actors were all chosen from Disney actors by Rishikanth after he saw his brother's son watching Disney Channel and thought the actors in some of the shows would be ideal for roles in the film. A whole school in England was used for a major portion of shooting with many of the pupils starring as school children.
