History
editDesign Within Reach, a national furniture retailer, was founded in 1999 by Rob Forbes, a former potter with an M.B.A. from Stanford University, who believed there was a retail demand among consumers for pieces by the likes of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. He started the company as a catalog and web resource for modern furniture. [1] The company grew very quickly and went public in July 2004, raising $49.2 million in its IPO.[2] The company expanded rapidly and by the end of 2009 was operating 68 Studios in 25 states. The company voluntarily delisted its shares and sold a majority interest to Glenhill Capital in July 2009. [3]
Current
editJohn Edelman was named President and CEO in January 2010.[4] Under Edelman's guidance, the company has returned to its roots and is once again a leader in modern design. In late 2010 DWR relocated its corporate headquarters to the Harbor Point redevelopment in Stamford, CT. [5] The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development is providing as much as $1.5 million in tax credits through the Urban and Industrial Sites Reinvestment Tax Credit program. The program provides tax credits on investments made in urban or industrial sites.[6]
Locations
editDesign Within Reach currently operates 49 Design Studios across the United States and Canada. DWR will open a flagship store in Stamford, CT in June 2011.
