In boxing, a multiple champion is a boxer who has been the champion of multiple weight class (boxing)es. It is mostly applied to professional boxers who have won multiple world titles.
History
editIn the early twentieth century, there were nine widely recognised weight classes, and world champions were proclaimed by acclamation: if the media acquiesced in a promoter's description of a fight as being for the world title, then ipso facto it was. In subsequent decades, the number of widely-used weight classes has increased to seventeen, by adding two below flyweight and six intermediate classes "super" (slightly heavier than) or "junior" (slightly lighter than) a neighbouring class. In addition, there is a proliferation of sanctioning bodies, each awarding its own world titles; and there are also virtual titles awarded by the boxing media based on varying interpretations of the lineal championship. These factors have made it increasingly easy for a boxer to become a multiple champion.
