Anchor tests

edit

Various ways to place anchors around section headers. See also the (currently conflicting) rationales at Template:Anchor/doc § Rationale for placement above header and Wikipedia:Manual of Style § SECTIONSTYLE.

There's an active discussion about this at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style § Instructions on the placement of "Anchor" templates

Below header

edit

The disadvantage of this is that links to this section scroll a bit too far down so that the header isn't visible.

In header, unsubstituted

edit

The disadvantage of this is that template transclusions within section headers are disallowed by MOS:HEADINGS. Also, when editing this section, the template name also appears in the edit summary (which looks messy), and after publishing changes you are taken to the top of the page, not to the section you edited.

In header, substituted

edit

The disadvantage of this is that it makes the wikicode look ugly, and it may confuse readers.

Above header

edit

The disadvantage of this is that the anchor only shows up when editing the above section, and not when editing this section. Also, when editing the above section, the editor automatically puts a blank line between the anchor and the header (which is in this case undesireable).
