General
editr/Vexillology, or The Vexillology Subreddit, is a subreddit for those who "enjoy learning about flags, their place in society past and present, and their design characteristics."[1] It is a subreddit where people learn about, identify, and create flags, as the name Vexillology suggests.[1]
Community
editThe subreddit has 557k members as of December 2022, it is in the top 1% of ranked by size.[2] The subreddit is also known for creating flag redesigns, and though a rare occurrence, the redesign may be sometimes seriously considered by the authority to which the flag belongs, like a town.[3] The community often helps each other by identifying lesser-known flags seen by other members.[4]

Contests and Rules
editMonthly Contests
editEvery month the subreddit holds a contest where people will create flags for places that don't have one, redesign existing flags, create flags for fictional places, etc. The subreddit is also known to collaborate with r/ImaginaryMaps for their contests, and the winning fictional countries from the Imaginary Maps Subreddit, can and have been picked as the fictionary country for which flags are created. Usually, a contest is held with the first 15 days going towards the creation of the flag, and the last 15 days going towards voting and deciding which flag/s is the best. When somebody's flag is voted as the number one best flag of the month, it is placed in The Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is an image containing all the past flag winners and when they won.
Rules
editThe subreddit has lots of rules to ensure that every post is filled with information and remains serious. There are seven rules which in short can be described as:
- Discussion should be related to the study of flags[5]
- Keep it Civil[5]
- Avoid low-effort commenting[5]
- Avoid discussing NSFW Tag[5]
- Don't crosspost to political, meta, or drama subs[5]
- Review Submission Rules if posting[5]
- Comment added[5]
The 7th rule means that when creating a post, you must also comment on it, explaining whatever you have created in a serious manner, within the first few minutes of the post being up.
MashMonday
editMashMonday is a subreddit flair for posts that are combining flags, or creating a flag redesign in the style of another flag. MashMonday, as the name suggests, is only allowed on Monday, and any posts which combine or "mash" flags together will be removed if not posted on Monday.[6]
