Afriponics Afriponics was a term created to denote a method of farming fish and vegetables.
While the broad principle is similar to Aquaponics, there are a number of fundamental differences, which relate directly to farming conditions in Africa.
The most important is that the system started, by replicating McMurtry M.'s Aqua-Vegeculture System, specifically using sand as the media bed. However, after discussions with McMurtry M., it had shifted too far towards fish production to be a true replica of his system, so another name was given.
McMurtry M.'s Aqua-Vegeculture System was feild-tested in African during the early PhD work and was the precursor to what many refer to as Aquaponics. Perhaps the term Afriponics is a little closer to this original system than subsequent Aquaponic systems.
