I have previously checked out pages of all linked places (including counties, towns, and communities) within New York state. I have also previously checked out Italy and its regions, provinces, and all capital cities. I have also previously checked out some cities and few regions of England.

I edited (without saving) until days ago only cities and villages within New York. I just finished editing (without saving) List of cities in Texas and the template page for each county of Texas.

I quit editing article pages a while ago. Very recently, I began to edit pages again. I replaced one New York map for another New York map on the pages of many villages and cities in and near New York's Adirondack Park. I added an infobox to at least one village, including all codes and text for coordinates, population, settlement type, subdivision name and type, ZIP code, FIPS code, established title and date, pushpin map (of New York), and other stuff.

Maps and Places

edit

In the recent past I have done a lot concerning pushpin maps using the template page Template:Infobox settlement. These are easy to understand maps of countries and states. I find coordinates using degrees, minutes, and seconds, and I can place those coordinates in a map of an area including the spot where these coordinates land. I can put the coordinates in any position on a map by adjusting the coordinate numbers. I can put coordinates on any map that uses the pushpin system (with an infobox settlement) to place the coordinates. I can place many maps in a table. I can also put a bunch of fake coordinate locations on a single map, by using several maps at once, only the first one receiving the pushpins.

Recently, I have found it possible to add up to nine different locations on a single map, and have them all in correct locations based on the coordinates for the locations. For each county of New York state, I have used at least one map based on the template page Template:Location map many to find out if cities and villages within each county are in the correct county, and are all in different locations within that county. Shortly, I will add a new section with one map using "location map many" showing the locations of several of New York's lakes.

This lake is a community!!!

edit

I have figured out how to put in a specific type of map of New York (using infobox settlement and the pushpin system), and to specify the parameters for each community. I found that this is possible with anything that has coordinates. Below, is an example of the full code I used to make a map (which follows) using infobox settlement for a lake:

  • {{Infobox settlement
  • |name = [[Oneida Lake]]
  • ||pushpin_map =New York
  • |pushpin_label_position = bottom
  • |pushpin_mapsize = 1030
  • |pushpin_map_caption = Location of Oneida Lake in New York state
  • |pushpin_map_alt = New York state showing the location of Oneida Lake
  • |latd=43 |latm=12 |lats=00 |latNS=N
  • |longd=75 |longm=54 |longs=00 |longEW=W
  • }}
Location of Oneida Lake in New York state
Coordinates: 43°12′00″N 75°54′00″W / 43.20000°N 75.90000°W / 43.20000; -75.90000

It appears that I can put this type of map (infobox settlement) to the page of any place (not just communities) with specific coordinates (at least in the form shown above), specifying the map of any country or other major place that has this type of map. I have done this with a few lakes of New York, a few cities in Italy, one location in Monterey Bay near California, and one city in England. I just tried out locations in Italy, China, England, Texas, and Russia but without community names (specifying coordinates without seeing any community pages).

This type of map looks best (of all of those I have seen on pages of New York communities) and it has county borders. I am able to see the relation of all communities in New York using this map. I can manipulate the map to be any size that I want and put the dot anywhere I desire. Some pages do not have an infobox, or have a geobox. Some have a map of New York's Adirondack Park instead of a map of New York. Some have a map with a large dot. Some have maps of New York showing the county, instead of the community. I can put this map type to the page of any community, lake, or any other location, if it has coordinates in the form shown above and has an infobox, not a geobox.

New York's Lakes

edit

Have fun looking at the map. I made it big so that all lake names would be clearly visible. I used Template:Location map many, the pushpin system and a map of New York state to place nine lakes in one map. I found the page for each of the nine lakes and then put the coordinates for each lake into the map, combining all nine of them. I changed the coordinates for each lake to position the name well so it would easily be visible and next to the lake. I used size 80 for the name which I put in bold. I also used marksize 1 so the dot would not show.

The following is a list of the lakes, alphabetically:

Oneida Lake

Canandaigua Lake

Seneca Lake

Cayuga Lake

Keuka Lake

Lake Champlain

Chautauqua Lake

Owasco Lake

Skaneateles Lake

Mistakes on Place Pages

edit

Here is where people can see the mistakes that I have found and NOT fixed. Previously, I had fixed a lot of mistakes concerning community and list pages of New York state and many mistakes on community pages of Italy.

In this area are the lists of pages for New York and Texas. Texas is huge here as I have found dozens of mistakes all over the place (and that is NOT counting the main county pages where the lists of communities were quite inconsistent and sometimes completely missing). The entries in the lists here are the page links with the mistakes. Each entry (except duplicates) is shown as a link with all text shown. Each entry usually has other links (such as a village page having a link to a county page, or a template county page having a link to a ghost town page).

UPDATE: I have fixed the page List of cities in Texas, including adding all cities and removing all communities that are not cities. This was a huge task.

UPDATE: I have finished checking each city and village page of New York for infobox, New York map (showing community, not county), FIPS code, and incorporation date. I added the FIPS code to fifty different community pages, and changed the FIPS code for six other communities. These ones showed the town code instead of the village code. I added the infobox (including text for fields) to three pages that did not have the infobox (or geobox). Sometimes, I replaced the New York Adirondack map with the New York map (pushpin system). I did this for communities not in the park. Sometimes, I replaced one map of New York with another map of New York (the former showing the county instead of the community). Most pages do not have the incorporation date within the infobox. Soon, I may check pages for town in infobox. And I may add incorporation date and town to infobox for city and village pages.

City/Village pages

183 communities in this list have no incorporation dates. Almost this entire list is the incorporation dates missing. Coordinates were marked as 'incorrect' when a community was found to be outside of the county where it should be located, using the pushpin system. Rare times, I had to enlarge the map to a great size. I have recently found that the pushpin system allows for a pixel width as much as about 16,000. To the right, is an example of one infobox showing a map I have sometimes added to community pages and the infobox fields that I have sometimes added, fixed, or changed.
