Unified school district 369 is a public high school in Burrton, Kansas, executing grades K through 12. The current Superintendent and elementary principal is Jeff Shearon. The high school principal is Joan Simoneau.

History and current state

The mission statement of Unified School District 369 is to provide a safe and caring environment conducive to excellence in education where students can become productive, responsible citizens and lifelong learners to meet the challenges of the future. The school maintains a high standard for its students and faculty. Administrators and faculty work together to promote and maintain a high level of excellence in themselves and the students. Students are challenged to achieve excellence through a rich selection of classes, extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities.

Burrton High School

BHS offers a traditional curriculum with the opportunity for advanced courses as well. Students may earn dual credit through Hutchinson Community College presented through an ITV format as well as any num-ber of online courses available in our online learning lab. Advanced Place-ment courses, which is something that is typically not offered at a small school, are also available through an online format here at BHS.

Burrton High School is a 1-A school of approximately 75 students and is located on the same campus with the district’s elementary and middle school. We have outstanding, modern facilities with a 1600 seat capacity gymnasium. BHS offers a personalized education where staff can really get to know the students and work to maximize educational improvement. Falling through the cracks is something that doesn’t happen here. BHS runs on an 8 period traditional schedule with a 30 minute seminar session near the noon-hour. This seminar time is used for things like supplemental reading, test prep, homework assistance, and class or organizational meetings. Many of the classrooms at BHS are equipped for interactive instruction with technology and there are an abundance of computer resources available. The city of Burrton is 40 miles from Wichita located between Hutchinson and Newton. The city of 900 residents provides small-town living far enough from the city, but close enough for convenience.

There are multiple opportunities for students to be involved in activities and earn experience in leadership positions. Included in these are: Art Band Vocal Music Drama Journalism Yearbook Student Council KS Assn. for Youth Cheerleading National Honor Soc. Scholar’s Bowl

To earn a BHS diploma students must complete 24 credits and eight full semesters. The following credits are required: 4 units of Language Arts 3 units of Social Sciences (including American History, Government, and World History) 3 units of Mathematics 3 units of Science 1 unit of Physical Education and Health 1 unit of Computer Science 1 unit of Life Skills or Industrial Arts 1 unit of Fine Arts

Foreign languages

Regular classes are offered in French, Spanish, German, Latin, and Mandarin Chinese (as of 2008).

The foreign language department regularly engages in exchange programs with students of Spanish-, French-, and German-speaking countries. The German program was involved in an exchange with students from Munich, Germany in the 2005-2006 school year.

Science and technology

The science and technology department at Wellesley High School offers a comprehensive program of science education and a selection of electives in technology. The departmental sequence in science consists of earth science in ninth grade, chemistry in tenth grade, biology in eleventh grade, and physics in twelfth grade. AP courses are offered in chemistry (as a second-year course), biology, and Physics B.

Electives in technology consist of wood manufacturing, automotive technology, and design technology. Robotics is offered by demand. Operating without any school funding, Wellesley Botball team managed to place 1st regionally and Top 10 Internationally in 2009.

Social studies

The social studies department offers several elective majors, available for junior and senior students. These include Russian History, Theory of Knowledge, East Asian History, Economic Theory, Political Science, and Sociology. The department offers two advanced placement courses: AP Psychology and AP United States History.

Health and fitness

The Health and Fitness Department offers a variety of courses designed to promote the current and future health of students. A variety of fitness options are provide to allow all students to participate in a fitness program that is appropriate to their level. Classes covering various health related topics are offered to ensure that students are aware of the risks and benefits that various life activities may entail.

Mathematics

Standard mathematics classes include geometry freshman year, algebra sophomore year, analysis junior year and calculus and statistics senior year (all offered in varying levels). AP Calculus, both AB and BC, and AP Statistics are offered senior year. There is also a separate Interactive Mathematics Program (IMP) track through junior year.

Guidance

The Guidance Department provides a variety of services in three areas: personal/social, career/college, and academic counseling. Counselors spend the majority of their time working directly with students. Through individual counseling and semester-long guidance seminar classes, counselors address the developmental needs of students and provide crisis intervention. Its current director is BLANK.

The Student Handbook

The Burrton Student Handbook is given to all students attending Burrton schools. Its purpose is to outline all the official rules of the school, such as consequences for behavior and exactly what is not allowed. A student can not be punished for anything not written in the handbook, and punishments must fit the guidelines written in the handbook.

The school newspaper

The Charger Courier is the Burrton High School newspaper. The Journalism class is responsible for publishing new issues.

Red Ink

Red Ink is an arts and literary magazine with student submitted poetry, stories, and otherwise.

Extracurricular activities

Burrton High School offers many after school clubs that are mostly run by students. Notable clubs include the active 4N6 Debate Club, the Key Club, the Robotics Team, Band, and Sports.

Sports

Burrton participates in the Heart of the Plains League. The Chargers have earned multiple league titles and several state titles throughout the years. Over 70% of all students participate in one of the ## different offered sports at some point during their time at Unified School District 369. Altogether, there are ## varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams at the school.

Residential Carpentry Program

BHS also has a Residential Carpentry program that provides hands-on training for those interested in resi-dential construction. Students partici-pate in actual home renovations and new construction projects.
